Major Property Damage & Business Interruption - Coal Mining Facility

The experience of Technical Assessing extends to the assessment of major property damage and business interruption claims for the mining industry. The severe floods that decimated the central Queensland coalfields in January 2008 caused significant damage to open cut coalmines, heavy machinery and infrastructure.

Technical Assessing were appointed by Underwriters to assess major property damage and business interruption claims arising from the event.

Claims as far as Antarctica

Technical Assessing has been appointed to a number of complex and unusual claims in the Antarctic region. One such incident arose from the spillage of diesel fuel into the perma-frost. The reinstatement of the perma-frost was problematic.

Our adjuster drew on the expertise of scientists from around the world to develop an innovative rectification process involving the construction of a permeable barrier and the use of bio-remediation to decontaminate the perma-frost over time.

Heavy Plant and Equipment

Construction sites can be hazardous and incidents involving fixed tower cranes and large mobile cranes are often the reason. Technical Assessing has been called on to deal with significant incidents when cranes have collapsed or tipped over. Apart from dealing with the claim for the damage to the crane, there can be significant third party damage and personal injury claims.

Technical Assessing has also been heavily involved in the process of assisting Underwriters to recover substantial claim costs.

Offshore and Marine Structures

Technical Assessing has handled a number of claims associated with the construction of offshore and marine structures. Such include wharves and jetties, ocean outfalls, canal developments, and seawalls.

The complex engineering nature of these structures, the effects of waves and wind, and the design issues which need to be considered for such structures, including standard recurrence intervals and reasonable precautions against damage, are all matters which Technical Assessing is familiar with.

Contract Works and Recovery

When a water pipe fitting burst on level 18 of a new building under construction, flooding that level and causing significant damage to lower levels, Underwriters immediately contacted Technical Assessing.

Our experience in such matters allowed our adjusters to quickly agree a scope of works and implement a system to monitor rectification costs.

Nearly all trades were affected, including electrical, mechanical, lifts, plasterboard, carpet, carpentry, and fire services.

Tests on the fitting revealed defects which enabled a successful recovery.
